Bar Hill is a purpose-built village with a population of approximately 4,000 and is located about 4 miles northwest of Cambridge.
Its name originated from being built along an old Roman Road that had a toll bar/gate, which was located on Bar farm. The farm house still remains next to the village school and the tollgate was also located near this building. As the farm was built near to one of the many hills in the area the name of Bar Hill was decided as the name of the village.
Planning for the village began in the late 1950s to alleviate the housing shortage in South Cambridgeshire which saw the first residents arriving circa 1967.
The village is very well served and has a large shopping mall including a Tesco store, library with post office counter, primary school, three pre-schools, church, a pub called The Fox and a championship 18 hole Golf Course and Hotel. The secondary school catchment is Swavesey Village College, which is one of Cambridgeshires most regarded schools.
