HISTORY William Sands House , 3 Cowbit Road , Spalding , is part of a substantial gentleman's residence built in the 1770s and converted into two separate dwellings in the 1980s. It is an important example of provincial classical architecture , listed 2*, in a prominent position on the River Welland in the centre of the town. It has two outstanding reception rooms with elaborate contemporary moulding. It is described by Pevsner in the Lincolnshire volume of THE BUILDINGS OF ENGLAND ( 2nd ed 1989, p 675 ).The house is named after the architect William Sands Junior (c1730-80) , who continued the work of the eponymous William Sands (who died in 1751 ) as a Spalding based architect and mason . The house was for many years the residence of the proprietor of the adjoining brewery originally opened in 1809 by Henry Bugg . The company was controlled by the Soames Family from the late 1880s until 1949 when it was taken over by Steward and Patterson of Norwich who sold it to Watney Mann in 1963 . It ceased trading in 1967. The brewery was later demolished . The iron gates at the house's entrance carry the letters S and P linking the property to its past . The orchard is semi -enclosed by a handsome brick wall . The ornamental archway with zigzag mouldings is the rebuilt entrance of the former Star Inn , which was open from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century serving , it is said , as a poor school for a time .
