Area Information

The Riverside area provides a scenic stroll along the footpath that connects Stourbridge and Midsummer Commons and gives access into the centre of the city, where there are moorings for several River Boats.

The Abbey Stadium is here, home to Cambridge United football club who play in the EFL League Two, with Barnwell Lake close to it. One of the oldest buildings in Cambridge is also nearby; The Leper Chapel which is one of the most important sites in the city, built in the 12th century, part of the buildings of a leper hospital.

There are numerous parks and open spaces in the Abbey Ward including Coldhams Common which offers six full-size football pitches, two junior football pitches, one Gaelic football pitch and an American football pitch.

Work has started on the Chisholm Trail which will be a new cycle superhighway and walking route that will follow a mostly off-road route between Cambridge North and Cambridge Station, opening up new commutes and ways to access green spaces between the north and the south.

Within the ward is a large retail park with a wide selection of retailers and restaurants, two supermarkets, smaller mini markets and several hotels. There are lots of independent businesses and shops in the area with the majority being on Newmarket/Barnwell Road.
