Longston is a popular village approximately 6 miles northwest of Cambridge and for most of its history the village was split into two parishes: Long Stanton All Saints and Long Stanton St. Michael and was not officially amalgamated into one village until 1953.
Longstanton remained very much a small village until the 1940′s when the village was transformed by the opening of RAF Oakington, which resulted in the building of three new housing estates and subsequent trebling of the population. The airbase became an army barracks in 1975; and on its closure in 1999 most of the housing was sold to private owners.
The ex-mod housing proves very popular as they offer generous accommodation and gardens, which were built in accordance to the officers ranking. Properties in Thatchers wood are the largest of the property styles and consist mainly of four and five bedroom detached houses and were built for the more senior officers.
The village has recently seen a big influx of all styles of new build homes from major developers such as George Wimpey, Kier, Charles Church and Persimmon which has resulted in huge growth for the village and higher demand from people looking to move from Cambridge. The new properties have ranged from modern apartments and starter homes for first time buyers to luxurious detached six bedroom Town Houses.
Facilities in Longstanton include a primary school, a village institute, doctors and dentist surgery, veterinary surgery, public house and village store with post office.
