Location

Newnham is a suburb on the west side of Cambridge. Historically, the name refers to a hamlet centred on a mill on the River Cam, a short distance to the south-west of the city centre. 

Area Information

Several Cambridge University colleges are situated in the Newnham ward including Newnham, Wolfson, Robinson, Selwyn and Darwin. In modern times Newnham has become one of the most affluent areas of Cambridge.

Newnham is highly popular as it is within a short walk of many important landmarks of the City and has a number of open and green spaces within it or close by. Lammas Land is a popular part with free to use tennis/table tennis, on site snack kiosk, seasonal bike hire and outside paddling pool. Penarth Place is a nature themed play space with a small playground and grass mounds. Sheep’s Green is grazed by cattle and is a natural wetland ecosystem. Coe Fen is managed to encourage natural diversity with cattle grazing in the summer, and the grass left uncut. The Backs provide stunning views throughout the year as several colleges of the University of Cambridge back on to the River Cam, their grounds covering both banks of the river. Paradise Local Nature Reserve is a pleasant woodland containing a central marsh area with wet woodland and several riverside mature willows.

Facilities

Newnham has a few independent shops and also a co-operative, there is a doctors surgery, numerous local nurseries close by and Newnham Croft Primary School.
